The best free AI tools without limits in 2026
By Enki · Updated
The short answer: very few free AI tools have no limits at all, and the only one with truly none is an open model running on your own computer. Among hosted tools, a handful are unlimited for their core job: ChatGPT for everyday text chat, Perplexity for basic search, Windsurf for code autocomplete, Grammarly for grammar and spelling, and Granola for capturing meeting notes. For images, Stable Diffusion is unlimited when you run it locally.
Everything else that calls itself free meters something: messages that reset every few hours, daily credits, monthly minutes or a short history. That is not a reason to avoid those tools, but it is worth knowing which wall you will hit before you build a habit, or a workflow, on top of one.
This guide sorts the free tiers we checked in October 2026 into what is really unlimited, what is unlimited with capped extras, and what is generous but capped. Each pick links to Enki's full review, where the free tier's exact limits are listed.

What "unlimited" means here
No hosted AI service is unlimited in the strict sense. Every one of them reserves the right to slow down or block heavy use to stop abuse and protect capacity, and the companies say so in their terms. So we used a practical test: a free tool counts as unlimited if its core job has no fixed cap published on the vendor's own pricing page, meaning no message count, no credit balance and no monthly minutes for that job.
That gives three groups:
- Truly unlimited: open models you run on your own hardware. Nobody meters them because nobody else is paying for the compute.
- Unlimited core, capped extras: the main job is uncapped, but premium features have quotas. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Windsurf, Grammarly and Granola sit here.
- Generous but capped: free plans that are good enough for daily use but stop you after a set amount. Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and most image, video and voice tools sit here.
We checked every free tier on the vendors' pricing pages in October 2026. Free plans change more often than paid ones, so the review page for each tool carries the date it was last checked.
Unlimited AI chat
ChatGPT is the best free AI chatbot without a message cap. Its free plan allows unlimited everyday text chats with OpenAI's base model, subject only to abuse guardrails. The limits apply to the heavier features: file uploads, image creation, voice chats, deep research and memory are all metered, and the free plan does not include the advanced reasoning models. For questions, drafting, summarising and brainstorming, you will not run out.
DeepSeek is the other chatbot people reach for when they want no paywall. Its chat app is free, it has no paid consumer plan at all, and it publishes no message quota, though the service is rate limited under heavy load. The catch is data: DeepSeek's privacy policy says it stores personal data in the People's Republic of China and uses inputs to train its models unless you email the company to opt out. Do not paste anything confidential into it.
Microsoft Copilot is free inside Windows, Edge and its own apps, but Microsoft describes the free version as limited and subject to available capacity, so it belongs in the capped group.
Two strong chatbots are capped rather than unlimited. Claude's free plan has a usage limit that resets every five hours, and Gemini's free plan runs within usage limits that Google adjusts, with separate caps on features like Deep Research. Both are excellent; you will just hit a wall on a long working day. For a full comparison of the paid plans, see the best AI assistants.

Unlimited AI search and research
Perplexity is the best free AI search engine without a cap. Its free Standard plan allows practically unlimited basic searches, each answered with citations you can click through, and it keeps your search history. The limits are on the deeper modes: 3 Pro Searches a day and 1 Research query a month, with Perplexity choosing the model for you.
For most lookups, basic search is enough. If you need long research reports, the free deep research modes in ChatGPT and Gemini are worth using alongside it, keeping in mind that both are capped. Whatever you use, open the sources behind any number you plan to repeat; free and paid tools alike still occasionally cite a page that does not say what the answer claims.

The answer engine you can cite
Practically unlimited cited searches for free. Pro Search is 3 a day and Research 1 a month.
Unlimited AI coding help
Windsurf, renamed Devin Desktop in June 2026, has the most generous free plan for writing code: unlimited Tab completions and inline edits, the autocomplete that suggests the next lines as you type. Its agents, which take on whole tasks, come with a light quota on the free plan, and model choice is limited.
The other popular editors meter even their basic features. Cursor's free Hobby plan has limited agent requests, and GitHub Copilot's free tier caps usage every month. If you code every day and do not want to pay, Windsurf's free autocomplete covers the part of the work you do most often. For agentic coding at no cost, an open coding model running locally through Ollama is the unlimited route, covered below. Our Cursor vs Windsurf comparison explains how the two editors differ once you pay.

Unlimited grammar and writing help
Grammarly's free plan checks spelling, grammar and punctuation without a limit, in the browser extension, desktop app, Google Docs and its mobile keyboard. What is capped is the generative AI: 100 AI prompts a month for rewriting or drafting. Full-sentence rewrites, tone rewrites and plagiarism checks need Pro, which costs $12 a month.
For most people that is the right split. Correcting what you write happens all day and stays free; asking AI to rewrite a paragraph is occasional, and a free chatbot such as ChatGPT can do it when the 100 prompts run out.

Writing help everywhere you type
Unlimited grammar and spelling checks wherever you type. Generative AI is 100 prompts a month.
Unlimited AI image generation
Every hosted image generator we checked meters free use with credits or daily caps: ChatGPT and Gemini limit free image creation, and Adobe Firefly runs on monthly generative credits. The one way to generate images without a limit is to run an open model on your own computer.
Stable Diffusion is the standard choice. Stability AI's Community License lets individuals and organisations with under $1 million in annual revenue use its models, including the Stable Diffusion 3.5 family, for free, commercial use included, and you own what you generate. You run it through a free interface such as ComfyUI. The costs are hardware and time: you need a computer with a capable graphics card, and setup takes an afternoon rather than a minute. In return there are no credits, no queue and no content leaving your machine. See the rest of the field in the best AI image tools.

Unlimited AI meeting notes
Granola's free Basic plan sets no cap on how many meetings it takes notes for. It captures your computer's audio without sending a bot into the call, combines the transcript with your own notes, and lets you chat with the AI across meetings. The limit is on history: the free plan only shows your last 30 days of meetings, and AI chat uses the automatic model only.
That makes it different from most free notetakers, which cap the input. Otter's free plan allows 300 minutes a month at up to 30 minutes per conversation, and Fireflies limits free AI summaries and storage. If you need notes for every call and only care about recent ones, Granola is the free pick. Compare it with Otter in Granola vs Otter.

No cap on meetings, no bot in the call. The free plan shows the last 30 days.
The only truly unlimited option: AI on your own computer
If you want an AI chatbot or coding assistant with no limits of any kind, run an open model locally. Ollama is the easiest way to do it: it is free, open source under the MIT license, and runs on macOS, Windows and Linux. Once a model is downloaded it works fully offline, and your prompts never leave your machine. Its library includes the main open model families, among them OpenAI's gpt-oss, Google's Gemma, Alibaba's Qwen and DeepSeek.
There are trade-offs. Smaller models run on a typical modern laptop, but the most capable open models need a lot of memory and ideally a dedicated graphics card, and even the best of them trail the newest paid models on the hardest tasks. Ollama also sells an optional cloud service, which is metered; the local app is not. For private documents, unlimited drafting or experimenting without a bill, it is hard to beat.

The catches of free AI
Free tools are paid for in other ways. Four are worth knowing before you rely on one.
- Your data may train the model. Free plans are where vendors most often use your conversations for training. ChatGPT lets you switch this off in its data controls; DeepSeek requires an email to opt out. Business plans usually exclude your data by default.
- Limits change without notice. Free tiers are the first thing vendors adjust when demand spikes. Gemini, for one, has changed how its free limits work during 2026. Do not build a business process on a free quota.
- Slower and smaller models. Unlimited free chat usually means the vendor's base model. It is fast and capable, but the strongest reasoning models sit behind the paywall.
- Privacy depends on where the data goes. Hosted tools process your prompts on someone else's servers, in some cases in other countries. For anything confidential, a local model is the safe default.
When a free tier stops being enough, the jump is small: most AI tools cost $8 to $20 a month for an individual. Our guide to the best AI tools for founders covers which ones are worth paying for, and Enki's deals page lists current discounts.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a completely free AI with no limits?
Yes, if you run it yourself. Open models running locally through a free app such as Ollama have no usage limits of any kind and work offline. Among hosted services, ChatGPT's free plan comes closest for chat, with unlimited everyday text chats on its base model, though its extras are capped.
Is ChatGPT free unlimited?
For everyday text chat, yes. ChatGPT's free plan allows unlimited text chats with OpenAI's base model, subject to abuse guardrails. File uploads, image creation, voice chats, deep research and memory are limited, and the advanced reasoning models need a paid plan.
Is Gemini free unlimited?
No. Gemini is free with a Google account and generous for daily use, but Google applies usage limits that reset over time, plus separate caps on features such as Deep Research and image generation.
Is Microsoft Copilot free and unlimited?
Copilot is free, but Microsoft describes the free version as limited and subject to available capacity. Paid Microsoft 365 plans raise the limits.
Is DeepSeek free and unlimited?
DeepSeek's chat app is free, has no paid consumer plan and publishes no message quota, though it is rate limited under heavy load. Its privacy policy says data is stored in China and used for training unless you email to opt out, so avoid sharing anything sensitive.
What is the best free AI image generator without limits?
Stable Diffusion run on your own computer. It has no credits or daily caps, and Stability AI's Community License makes it free, including commercial use, for anyone with under $1 million in annual revenue. Hosted image generators, including ChatGPT, Gemini and Adobe Firefly, all limit free use.
