Anthropic offers startups free Claude Team for a year

Reporting from TechCrunch

Anthropic's Claude Startups program now gives young companies 12 months of Claude Team, $1,000 in API credits and partner deals. Who qualifies.

What it means for founders

  • The dollar value is real, and most of it sits in the seats. Premium Team seats list at $100 per seat per month on annual billing, or $125 monthly, per Anthropic's pricing page. A year of five seats is roughly $6,000 to $7,500 at list price, several times the API credit.
  • Plan for month 13 now. If your team comes to rely on Premium seats and the Claude Code access bundled with Team, a five seat bill of about $500 a month could follow. Set a reminder for month 11 and decide then whether to drop to $20 Standard seats, keep Premium, or leave.
  • Spend the $1,000 early. The credits expire six months after the grant, so credit claimed this week is gone around April 2027. Use the credits to benchmark Claude against the model you pay for today, and weigh it against the alternatives in our guide to AI tools for founders.
  • Bedrock and Vertex users miss out. If you call Claude through AWS or Google Cloud, the credits only help after you move traffic to Anthropic's API. Watch whether Anthropic publishes renewal terms before the first free years run out in October 2027. Plans are on our Claude tool page.

The story

Anthropic expanded its Claude Startups program on Tuesday, October 6, adding 12 months of Claude Team at no cost, $1,000 of API credit and a catalogue of partner discounts for young companies. The relaunch was timed to SF Tech Week and Anthropic's Founder House event in San Francisco, TechCrunch reported.

What the Claude Startups program includes

Approved companies receive, per the program page:

  • Claude Team for a year, covering as many as five Premium seats, but only for organisations new to the Team plan.
  • $1,000 in API credits, claimed in the Claude Console. They lapse six months after being granted.
  • Higher API rate limits for members who receive credits.
  • The Claude Startup Stack, deals Anthropic values at up to $45,000 combined, offered by outside vendors such as ClickHouse ($5,000 in cloud credits), ElevenLabs, Granola and Hex.
  • Office hours: 45-minute live sessions with the Applied AI group at Anthropic, held every other week.

Startups backed by a venture firm in Anthropic's partner network can claim up to $100,000 more in API credits through that investor.

Who qualifies and how to apply

A company must have been founded within the past five years or raised money within the past two. Bootstrapped and pre-seed teams can apply. Applicants need a Console account, an email address on the same domain as the company website, and a brief description of the product. Anthropic says most decisions arrive within minutes; the rest get a manual check of two to three business days. There is no published deadline: the official terms say selections happen on a rolling basis.

The credits apply only to Anthropic's own API; usage through Bedrock or Vertex AI does not count. Partner offers are run by the vendors, not Anthropic. The terms also let Anthropic name accepted companies publicly as customers and change or end the program at its discretion. Companies based in a list of excluded countries, among them China, Russia and Iran, cannot join.

What we don't know yet

  • What happens on day 366. Nothing published says whether the Team plan converts to paid seats automatically or simply ends.
  • Whether the five Premium seats can be traded for a larger number of Standard seats.
  • What Anthropic's "supportability policies", which every applicant must meet, actually require. The page cites them without detail.
