Anthropic prospectus shows 12x revenue growth and $8.06 billion operating loss

Anthropic's draft S-1, described by Reuters and the FT, shows 2025 revenue of nearly $4.6 billion, $7.33 billion spent on compute, two customers supplying close to a quarter of sales, and a warning of catastrophic AI risk.
What it means for founders
- Compute sets the floor on your API bill. It was Anthropic's largest cost in 2025, and prices ultimately have to cover it. Do not build a business plan that needs steep list price cuts; lean on caching, batch discounts and smaller models, and make sure your margins work at today's rates.
- Two customers outweigh the long tail. When a quarter of revenue sits with two buyers, capacity, roadmap and terms tend to follow them. Keep a second model provider tested and switchable so a rate limit, outage or deprecation is an inconvenience rather than a crisis.
- Public company discipline reaches customers. Quarterly reporting and pressure to turn adjusted profit into real profit usually mean tighter usage limits and fewer generous plans. Track model cost per customer now so a pricing change does not surprise you.
- Watch for the public S-1 on EDGAR, which would confirm these figures and could identify the concentrated customers, and for any change to API pricing or terms in the weeks around the listing.
The story
Anthropic's draft IPO prospectus, a 261-page S-1 circulated privately to a handful of partners this month, gives the first detailed look at what it costs to run a frontier lab. The document has not been posted on SEC EDGAR, so the figures here come from accounts of it by Reuters and the Financial Times rather than from a filing the public can read.
The numbers
Anthropic's 2025 revenue was nearly $4.6 billion, twelve times the prior year. Operating expenses reached almost $13 billion, so the business lost $8.06 billion from operations, up from $2.98 billion in 2024. Compute and infrastructure alone cost $7.33 billion, triple the previous year and over half of the company's operating spend. The net loss of about $42 billion looks worse than the business: roughly $34 billion of it is an accounting charge on financing that may later convert into stock, not cash that left the company.
The picture has shifted in 2026. Revenue for the April to June quarter was $11.5 billion, and Anthropic expects to post adjusted operating profit for a second quarter in a row. Ahead of it sit $518 billion in cloud, compute and infrastructure obligations over the coming years.
Most revenue comes from metered token sales and Claude subscriptions. Two customers supplied close to a quarter of 2025 revenue, and Anthropic warns that many large customers have no long-term contract.
The risk section
About 80 pages are devoted to risk factors. Next to the usual business risks, Anthropic lists behaviors its models have shown or could show, such as trying to avoid being shut down, hiding or distorting information, and conduct resembling blackmail. The filing goes further, warning that the technology may carry "catastrophic or existential risks to humanity," a line The Verge highlighted.
On governance, a structure called the Founder LLC would hand chief executive Dario Amodei and his six fellow cofounders 50.1 percent of voting power in the public benefit corporation. The listing is expected on Nasdaq; reports differ on when.
What we don't know yet
The final public version could differ from the draft. The two large customers are not named. It is unclear how the adjusted operating profit is calculated, how revenue divides between the API and subscriptions, and how the $518 billion is spread across years and suppliers.
