Anthropic previews Claude Duet, a proactive AI agent

Claude Duet, a research preview, sends a daily brief, runs tasks in the cloud and asks before sensitive steps. US Pro and Max users can join the waitlist.
What it means for founders
- Your stack decides its value. If billing lives in Stripe or QuickBooks and payroll in Gusto, chasing unpaid invoices and preparing payroll for review are the realistic first tests, so check the marketplace for your tools.
- Shared limits are a real cost. Duet has no allowance of its own, so background checks through the day eat into the allowance left for chats and other Claude work. Track usage for a week before handing it big builds.
- Expect misses while it is in preview. Anthropic warns Duet may misread a thread, misjudge urgency or miss something that lands between checks, and it cannot yet show you its browser. Read approval requests closely, above all for customer-facing work.
- Compare before you commit. The Verge frames Duet as a rival to Muse from Meta and Dots from OpenAI. Once off the waitlist, run one real workflow on whichever you can access before picking a vendor.
The story
Anthropic on Wednesday, October 21, put Claude Duet into a waitlisted research preview. It is a separate app on iOS, Android and claude.ai that messages users first instead of waiting to be prompted. Anthropic introduced Duet for small business owners and busy professionals, and the first invitations go to US subscribers on the Pro and Max plans.
What Claude Duet does
Requests go into a single chat, typed or spoken. The work itself happens in a browser on a remote machine Anthropic runs, so a phone or laptop does not need to stay on. Anthropic pitches Duet for anything from calendar admin to larger builds such as dashboards, forecasts and small web apps. It can tap the Claude Marketplace, home to more than 6,000 plugins and connectors, including QuickBooks, Stripe, Gusto, HubSpot, Docusign and Shopify.
The proactive side rests on Claude Opus 5.5 and on whatever memory, skills and connected apps a user already keeps in their Claude account. The day starts with a summary pulled from those connected services. It then checks those accounts every few hours and, Anthropic says, only messages when something needs a decision, though the company is still tuning that judgment. The interval is meant to save usage, Anthropic says.
Guardrails on money and data
Some actions, among them securities trades and transfers between accounts, are blocked even if the user approves. For the rest, Anthropic says Duet needs a sign-off before anything leaves the user's hands: outgoing messages, payments, signatures and deletions all pause for approval, while reading and drafting do not. For business purchases it can use Stripe's Link, which asks the user to approve the spend and pays with a virtual card, or check out with Shopify's Shop Pay. Anthropic adds that the agent never directly sees passwords or sign-in tokens, and that a new classifier is designed to stop it sharing card numbers or government ID details.
Plans and limits
There is no separate price: once admitted, Pro and Max subscribers pay for Duet out of their normal Claude usage. The periodic account checks count against that pool too, and heavier jobs, such as building a deck or a financial model, use more of it. Duet is not yet offered on Team or Enterprise plans, and it does not yet appear inside the regular Claude app.
What we don't know yet
- When the waitlist widens, and whether Team and Enterprise plans follow.
- How fast background checks and large tasks drain a plan in practice.
- The fuller safety design, which Anthropic says it will detail in the coming days.
