Overview

Codex is OpenAI's coding agent and comes with ChatGPT plans rather than as a separate product. It runs as an open-source CLI, an IDE extension for VS Code, Cursor and others, inside the ChatGPT desktop app, and as Codex Cloud, where each task gets its own workspace that keeps working while your computer sleeps and can open pull requests. Paid plans add automatic GitHub code review and a Slack integration.

Enki verdict

The best value way into agentic coding if you already pay for ChatGPT, with strong cloud tasks and review; limits are harder to predict than rivals'.

Key features

Pros & cons

What we like

  • Included with ChatGPT, with limited access even on Free
  • Open-source CLI under Apache 2.0
  • Cloud tasks with their own workspaces, PRs and automatic code review

Worth noting

  • Usage limits come as wide ranges, not fixed numbers
  • Free and Go get only the smallest model
  • An API key loses all cloud features

Codex FAQ

Is Codex free?
Partly. ChatGPT Free and Go include limited Codex in the desktop app with the GPT-6 Luna model, subject to rollout. The CLI, cloud tasks, code review and stronger models need Plus or above.
How much does Codex cost?
Codex comes with ChatGPT plans: Plus is $20 a month, Pro is $100, $200 or $500, and Business is $20 per user a month billed annually. Using an API key instead is billed at API rates and drops the cloud features.
Is the Codex CLI open source?
Yes. The Codex CLI is open source under the Apache 2.0 license.
What are Codex usage limits?
OpenAI gives ranges rather than fixed caps, per five hours and per week, depending on the model. On Plus, the heaviest model allows roughly 5 to 45 local messages per five hours. Pro plans have no five-hour limit.
